Properly Dispose of Automotive Fluids

PreviousNext

Return used motor oil for recycling
Never pour oil onto the street or down a storm drain. It will end up, untreated, in the river. Most gas stations accept used oil, and so do many automotive stores. Some municipalities also collect used oil as part of a community household hazardous waste collection.

Sweep sidewalks and driveways – never hose them.
Hosing off hard surfaces just washes it into storm drains.

To remove automotive fluids from your driveway:

  1. Soak up liquids with wipes or absorb the surface oil with granular coconut husk or kitty litter/clay and dispose of in the trash receptacle.
  2. Once the pavement is dry, or if the stain was already dry, wet the stain with water and scrub with a stiff brush and a paste made from baking soda and water, or a few drops of dish detergent. Absorb after 10–60 minutes. Repeat as needed.
  3. Use wipes to clean the pavement and let it air dry.
