The Bernalillo and Sandoval County metropolitan area covers over 250 square miles, virtually all of it sloped toward the Rio Grande. The vertical drop is nearly a mile from Sandia Crest to the river, making an elaborate storm drainage system necessary. During a rain storm, this puts enormous pressure on 722 miles of storm drains throughout the area.

As stormwater sweeps everything in its path into the river, the quality of that water has become a critical challenge for all of us.
